Vakil Water Storage

The Vakil Water Storage features a massive, conical brick dome rising above the surrounding rooftops, anchored by a deep underground chamber. Built in the eighteenth century during the Zand dynasty, this structure served as a public cistern for Shiraz. Karim Khan Zand directed its construction to secure a reliable water supply for the city's inhabitants. Inside, the thick walls kept the water cool even during the scorching summers, while the intricate ventilation shafts ensured the air stayed fresh for the thirsty crowds above.
