Children's Peace Monument

The Children's Peace Monument features a bronze statue of a young girl holding a golden crane above her head. It honors Sadako Sasaki, a girl who developed leukemia following the nineteen forty-five atomic bombing. Sadako spent her final months folding paper cranes, believing a thousand of them would grant her a wish to live. After her death, her classmates campaigned to build this memorial. Thousands of paper cranes sent by children from around the world decorate the glass cases surrounding the base today.
