Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims

A circular fountain sits at the center of the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, marked with the exact time of the explosion, eight fifteen. The hall exists underground, reached by a long, sloping walkway that descends into silence away from the city noise. Architects designed the space to evoke a feeling of isolation, drawing visitors toward the names of those who died.
