Kamiyacho Shareo is a subterranean city beneath the main intersection of Hiroshima, marked by a glass-domed atrium that brings daylight into the underground corridors. It opened in two thousand one as the first full-scale underground shopping mall in the Chugoku region. Engineers built the facility to connect the city's tram and bus networks with the retail district above. On the day of its grand opening, over two hundred thousand people crowded into the tunnel system, despite a heavy rainstorm falling on the streets above.
