The Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine features a massive, vermilion torii gate that towers over the entrance, standing far larger than the typical wooden structures found at smaller shrines. This site serves as a spiritual home for the souls of those from the region who perished in wars since the Meiji Restoration. Originally established near the city’s castle in eighteen sixty-eight, the shrine was completely obliterated by the atomic bombing in nineteen forty-five. It rose again in its current location within the castle ruins.
