Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Rest House

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Rest House stands out with its plain, cream-colored concrete walls and a flat roof that slices against the sky. Built in nineteen twenty-nine as a fuel distribution center, it survived the atomic blast because of its thick, reinforced structure. Eizo Nomura was in the basement when the bomb detonated, shielded by the concrete floor above him. He survived the heat and the firestorm, eventually walking out of the ruins as one of the few who lived that day.
