Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph

landmark

The Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph holds the names of every person who died because of the atomic bomb, whether they perished in the blast or later from radiation. Under its concrete arch, a stone chest keeps a registry of these individuals, and the list grows whenever researchers confirm another name. Architect Kenzo Tange designed the arc to mimic the ancient clay saddles of the Kofun period, intending to shelter the souls of the victims from the rain of the afterlife.
