Ruins of Hiroshima Imperial Army Headquarters

The Hiroshima Imperial Army Headquarters remains as a stone foundation and a few charred brick walls near the Hiroshima Castle moat. These ruins once supported a crucial node in Japan’s military command during the Sino-Japanese War of eighteen ninety-four. When the army moved operations here, Emperor Meiji actually relocated the Imperial Diet to this building for several months. Inside these now-hollow walls, commanders drafted the strategic directives that dictated the flow of troops across the sea before the atomic bomb left the structure gutted.
