Church of the Immaculate Conception

The Church of the Immaculate Conception features a prominent dome with a gold-leaf lantern that catches the morning light. Known locally as Las Monjas, it was built in the mid-eighteenth century as part of a convent for the Order of the Conception. A local nobleman, Manuel Tomás de la Canal, funded the construction to provide a religious life for his daughter. She became the first abbess, living behind these thick stone walls for forty years, never stepping out into the plaza again.
