The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel defines the skyline with its towering, pink-hued spires that resemble jagged rock candy. An indigenous stonemason named Zeferino Gutiérrez designed this neo-Gothic facade in the late nineteenth century. He had no formal training in architecture and reportedly relied on postcards of European cathedrals to guide his vision. The local authorities allowed him to transform the colonial structure, giving the town a centerpiece that feels entirely disconnected from the traditional stone churches found elsewhere in the region.
