St. Mary's Gate

St. Mary's Gate rises from the end of Mariacka Street as a red brick tower topped with distinctive gables and a narrow copper spire. Built in the late fifteenth century, it functioned as the primary entrance for merchants arriving from the Motława River. During the final months of the Second World War, Soviet artillery hit the structure repeatedly, leaving only the gutted shell. Restoration crews later rebuilt the gate using salvaged bricks, matching the original medieval profile that guarded the city for centuries.
