Highland Gate

The Highland Gate in Gdańsk stands out because of its heavy rusticated stone facade, which looks more like a fortified bunker than a grand entrance. Built in the late sixteenth century, it served as the formal start of the Royal Route where Polish monarchs entered the city. When King Stefan Batory arrived in fifteen seventy-seven, he reportedly found the gate so imposing he had to pay a massive toll before the city guards would lift the portcullis to let his entourage pass.
