Main Town Hall

The Main Town Hall in Gdańsk features a slender, copper-clad spire topped by a golden statue of King Zygmunt August. This building served as the seat of local government for centuries when the city operated as an independent entity under the protection of the Polish Crown. In nineteen forty-five, retreating German forces set the structure on fire, leaving only the exterior walls. Restorers eventually salvaged the blackened bricks, reconstructing the interiors to house the city museum, which preserves the original ornate council chambers.
