Golden Gate

The Golden Gate in Gdańsk stands out for its high, narrow silhouette topped by golden statues that crown the stone facade. Built in sixteen twelve, this triumphal arch replaced a medieval gate to project the city's wealth during its most prosperous era. During the final months of the second world war, the structure suffered nearly total destruction. Workers rebuilt it in nineteen fifty-seven, basing their work on photographs and fragments of the original stone carvings rescued from the rubble.
