Chlebnicka Gate

The Chlebnicka Gate stands out for its high, narrow silhouette topped by a steep, triangular gable that hides the roof behind it. This is the oldest water gate in Gdańsk, built in the fourteenth century to control passage from the Motlawa River into the city. In the mid-seventeenth century, the architect Jan Strakowski rebuilt the gate, adding the decorative stone facade that still faces the water. Ships once offloaded grain here, and city guards collected customs duties from the incoming merchants.
