Mariacka Street

Mariacka Street is paved with cobblestones and defined by the long, elevated stone terraces called przedproża that extend from the front of every house. These porches once served as meeting spots for merchants and storage for their cargo arriving from the Motława River. After the second world war, the street lay in ruins, but residents meticulously salvaged the original decorative stone carvings and gargoyles to reconstruct the facades. The writer Günter Grass lived nearby and frequently walked these stones, immortalizing the atmosphere in his books.
