The Fahrenheit Thermometer in Gdańsk is a slender, glass-encased monument topped with a thermometer that glows against the streetscape. It honors Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, the physicist who was born in this city in sixteen eighty-six. During a seventeenth-century winter, Fahrenheit used a mixture of ice, water, and ammonium chloride to establish the zero point on his scale. The local authorities installed this modern replica to mark the spot where his family home once stood before it vanished during the Second World War.
