Katownia

museum

The Katownia, or Torture House, rises as a heavy, red-brick fortification at the end of the Long Lane. It served as the gateway into the city's prison complex. In the sixteenth century, the town executioner lived in the upper rooms, while prisoners awaited trial in the dark chambers below. One recorded incident involves a man named Hans who spent months chained to the wall here, waiting for a pardon that arrived only moments after his final sentencing hearing concluded in the courtyard.
