Green Gate

The Green Gate features four narrow, high archways faced in light-colored stone that distinguish it from the surrounding brick facades of the Royal Route. Hans Kramer designed this residence for Polish monarchs in the late sixteenth century, though kings rarely stayed here. Instead, the building served as a grand reception space for visiting dignitaries. Peter the Great passed through these arches in seventeen sixteen, marking the moment when the city’s defensive gate transitioned into an ornate stage for welcoming European royalty.
