Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers of 1970

Three slender steel crosses rise over one hundred feet into the air, each topped with a heavy, golden anchor. This is the monument honoring the shipyard workers killed by state security forces during the brutal crackdown of December nineteen seventy. In the following decade, this plaza became the epicenter of the Solidarity movement. When Pope John Paul the Second visited in nineteen eighty-seven, he stood right here to pray, while thousands of workers demanded the right to form independent trade unions.
