District Six Museum

museum

The District Six Museum occupies the former Buitenkant Street Methodist Church, which stands out with its bright red front door and a facade painted with the names of families once forced from their homes. During the nineteen seventies, the apartheid government declared this area whites-only, bulldozing the vibrant, multiracial neighborhood to displace sixty thousand residents. Former residents started this museum to map out their old streets on the floor, using painted street names to guide visitors through their lost neighborhood.
