403 Market House

The Old Town House in Greenmarket Square stands out with its gabled Dutch architecture and the distinctive, weathered sandstone facade that has faced the square since seventeen fifty-five. It served as the city’s original burgher watch house, where citizens kept guard and held council meetings. Max Michaelis gifted his massive collection of seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish masters to the public, and the building became home to those works. The thick white walls still hold the quiet, polished atmosphere of a private gallery.
