St George's Cathedral

St George's Cathedral features rough, grey sandstone walls and pointed gothic arches that distinguish it from the flatter, surrounding buildings. Known as the People’s Cathedral, it served as a defiant refuge during the apartheid era. Archbishop Desmond Tutu famously led thousands of people out of these doors for a peace march in nineteen eighty-nine, despite a government ban on the protest. The church remained a persistent site of resistance, where clergy and activists organized across racial lines while police stood guard outside.
