The Old Granary

The Old Granary stands out with its thick, whitewashed stone walls and deep-set windows that seem to hold the heat of the Cape sun. Built in eighteen fourteen, this building served as a tax office and later a grain store, keeping the colony fed during lean harvests. Lady Anne Barnard reportedly danced in the original house that occupied this spot. Later, the structure housed the first public library in Cape Town, holding rows of books behind those massive, century-old foundation stones.
