Iziko Slave Lodge

The Iziko Slave Lodge stands as the oldest building in Cape Town, distinguishable by its distinct yellow facade and the heavy iron bars remaining on the ground-floor windows. Built by the Dutch East India Company in the late sixteen hundreds, this site housed thousands of enslaved people, convicts, and patients over two centuries. In seventeen fifty-four, a major fire broke out here, forcing the authorities to move the captives while the structure was repaired and eventually repurposed into government offices.
