The Grand Parade is a vast, open expanse of asphalt stretching out in front of Cape Town City Hall. It began as a simple parade ground for the Dutch East India Company in the seventeenth century. In nineteen ninety, Nelson Mandela stood on the balcony of the City Hall overlooking this square to deliver his first speech after being released from prison. Tens of thousands of people filled the space below to hear him speak, turning a former military drill field into a site of liberation.
