Castle of Good Hope

The Castle of Good Hope remains the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, defined by its stark, yellow-ochre pentagonal walls. Built between sixteen sixty-six and sixteen seventy-nine, the fortress replaced an earlier wooden structure to secure Dutch East India Company interests. Inside the walls, Governor Zacharias Wagenaer once presided over a growing settlement, while enslaved people and prisoners lived in its dark, crowded dungeons. One prisoner, a Khoi leader named Doman, escaped from these cells, launching a fierce, short-lived war against the Dutch.
