Parliament of the Republic of South Africa

The Parliament of South Africa stands out for the cluster of white gables and the massive dome that rises above the stone facade on Parliament Street. This complex served as the stage for the country’s colonial governance and later the formal birth of its multiracial democracy. In nineteen sixty-six, a man named Dimitri Tsafendas walked into these halls and assassinated Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd, the primary architect of apartheid. The building remains the home of the national legislature today.
