Delville Wood Memorial

historic

The Delville Wood Memorial in the Company's Garden features a bronze group of figures topped by a horse and rider held aloft by two men. It commemorates the South African Brigade that fought at Delville Wood in France during the First World War. In July nineteen sixteen, three thousand men went into that forest; only seven hundred and fifty walked out. The sculptor, Alfred Turner, crafted this bronze to honor those who held their position against relentless German counterattacks for six days.
