Tuynhuys

The white gabled facade of Tuynhuys stands near the top of the Company’s Garden, its Dutch colonial architecture distinct against the backdrop of Table Mountain. Originally built as a simple tool shed for the garden in the late seventeenth century, it evolved into the residence for the governors of the Dutch East India Company. During the nineteenth century, Sir George Grey turned the house into a social hub, hosting grand balls that filled the rooms with light and music well into the night.
