Groote Kerk Kaapstad

The Groote Kerk in Cape Town features a massive, unadorned white facade and a distinctively tall, square tower that dominates the corner of Adderley and Wale Streets. Completed in eighteen forty-one, this is the oldest church building in South Africa. Its congregation traces back to sixteen sixty-five, when the Dutch East India Company sent a minister to serve the fledgling outpost. Inside, the massive wooden pulpit, carved by Anton Anreith in seventeen eighty-nine, remains a centerpiece of the original sanctuary.
