Saffron Pear

The Saffron Pear is a narrow, Victorian-era townhouse distinguished by a bright, saffron-yellow facade and a distinctive, hand-carved teak front door featuring an intricate pear motif. Built in the late eighteen nineties, the structure served as the residence and workshop for a Dutch clockmaker named Willem van der Merwe. Legend holds that he spent seven years carving the door by candlelight, obsessed with capturing the curve of a specific pear he grew in his backyard, until he finally lost his eyesight.
