The deep green storefront with the gold lettering on Merchant Street stands where the old Bethel Church once anchored this corner. In the nineteen eighties, the space became Murphy’s Bar and Grill, a place that anchored itself to the local legal and business community instead. Don Murphy opened the doors to serve an Irish-style menu in the middle of a district dominated by government offices. Every Saint Patrick’s Day, they block off the entire street to host a celebration that draws thousands.
