The Woodward Loft Apartments stand out because of the faded, ghost-like sign for the Woodward Wight and Company painted in tall, weathered letters high on the brick exterior. This massive warehouse served as the headquarters for the largest ship chandlery in the South during the early twentieth century. From these floors, crews supplied steamboats and ocean liners with everything from heavy iron chains to delicate galley equipment. The company moved its entire operation here in nineteen eleven, anchoring the trade along the riverfront.
