Christ Church Cathedral

The red sandstone exterior of Christ Church Cathedral marks it as the oldest religious building in Houston. Built in eighteen ninety-three, it sits on the same ground where the city’s first Episcopal services were held in eighteen thirty-nine. When the foundation was laid, parishioners found a time capsule left by the previous congregation. Inside, a prayer book from the eighteen forties rested among coins and newspapers, preserving the quiet start of a church that survived three different buildings on this block.
