The TC Energy Center reaches into the Houston skyline with a crown of terracotta arches and spires that mimic the Gothic architecture of the fifteenth century. While its neighbors are sleek glass boxes, this tower wears a skin of granite and brick that feels plucked from a medieval cathedral. It opened in nineteen eighty-three as the RepublicBank Center. Philip Johnson designed the building to evoke Dutch guild houses, and the massive, barrel-vaulted lobby remains one of the most distinctive public spaces in the city.
