Monument Au Fantome by Jean Dubuffet

park garden

The Monument Au Fantome rises as a tangled, white fiberglass structure covered in thick, black, hand-drawn lines. Jean Dubuffet designed this sculpture to mimic the erratic, doodle-like quality of his sketchbook drawings on a massive, architectural scale. In nineteen eighty-three, he installed the piece to anchor the plaza. One of its sections forms a tree, another a phantom, and a third a portal. The structure creates a jarring, cartoonish presence among the surrounding glass and steel office towers.
