The limestone water tower stands eighty feet tall in the center of the lawn, topped by a pointed, shingle-clad roof. Built in eighteen ninety-nine, this structure once fueled the steam engines at the nearby Fort Sam Houston cavalry post. Colonel Clinton B. Sears designed the tower to mimic the medieval watchtowers he had seen in Europe, giving the military base an unexpected bit of castle architecture. Horses drank from the troughs at its base until the army decommissioned the facility in the nineteen twenties.
