First & Battery Portal Porch

park garden

The First and Battery Portal Porch features a series of layered, translucent glass panels that glow with an amber hue against the gray concrete of the surrounding transit tunnel entrance. Commissioned for the arrival of light rail in downtown Seattle, the installation serves as a rhythmic marker for commuters emerging from underground. Artist Christian Moeller designed the structure to mimic the movement of passing trains, using custom software to trigger subtle changes in the internal lighting as people approach the site.
