The Grand Central Building is a massive brick structure defined by its rounded corner tower and deep, arched windows along First Avenue. Built in eighteen eighty-nine, it replaced the wood-frame hotels that burned down in the Great Seattle Fire. In the early nineteen seventies, developer Bill Speidel convinced city officials to spare the building from demolition. He turned the hollowed-out shell into a series of interconnected storefronts and offices, sparking the restoration of the historic Pioneer Square district.
