Plazuela del Pozo

The Plazuela del Pozo anchors the Getsemani neighborhood with a stone well at its center, surrounded by low, colorfully painted colonial buildings. Long before modern water systems arrived, this well served as the primary freshwater source for residents and travelers who could not afford the expensive water imported from the mainland. A merchant named Pedro de Heredia supposedly claimed rights to the surrounding land in the sixteenth century, though local water carriers and washerwomen ultimately defined the daily life of this square for generations.
