The thick stone walls of the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara were built for the Poor Clares convent in sixteen twenty-one. Pirates and changing colonial fortunes forced the nuns out, and the structure later served as a charity hospital and even a prison. Local author Gabriel Garcia Marquez sat in these gardens while gathering inspiration for his novels. Today, the building houses a hotel, but the original vaulted ceilings and the quiet, enclosed courtyard still feel exactly like the cloister the nuns designed four centuries ago.
