Green Market

The Green Market occupies a long strip of stone pavement running against the eastern wall of Diocletian’s Palace. Its stalls are defined by a sea of colorful umbrellas shading mounds of dried figs, lavender sachets, and seasonal produce brought in from the surrounding countryside. Merchants have set up here every morning since the nineteenth century, relying on the Roman wall as a permanent backstop for their commerce. The stone masonry behind the vendors dates back nearly seventeen hundred years to the palace construction.
