Split Riva

The Riva is a long, palm-lined stone promenade that hugs the southern edge of Diocletian’s Palace. It functions as the city’s primary living room, defined by its wide limestone paving and rows of outdoor café tables. Before nineteen twenty-nine, this space was a chaotic, narrow strip of land outside the fortress walls. The city authorities cleared the area to create a grand maritime entrance, intentionally turning the emperor’s private, sea-facing residence into an open stage for the public to occupy.
