Three limestone townhouses stand together on Pikk Street, their steep, stepped gables rising sharply above the medieval cobblestones. Built in thirteen sixty-two, these merchant homes once stored goods from distant lands, with pulleys still mounted in the attic gables to hoist heavy sacks of salt or silk. Hans Vihtol, a wealthy trader, joined the three structures into a single residence during the fifteenth century. Thick walls and small windows kept the interiors cool, safe, and entirely hidden from the street outside.
