Rue Catherine Segurane

Rue Catherine Segurane is a narrow, winding street in the Old Town of Nice, distinguished by the sheer, imposing height of its weathered, mustard-colored facades that almost block out the sun. It takes its name from a sixteenth-century washerwoman who became the city’s folk hero. During the siege of Nice in fifteen forty-three, Catherine allegedly grabbed a heavy laundry beater and struck a Turkish soldier climbing the ramparts, knocking him down and rallying the retreating defenders to hold the walls.
