The Opéra de Nice stands out for its curved, cream-colored facade and its distinctively ornate, Second Empire style. It occupies the site of a former theater that burned to the ground in eighteen eighty-one during a performance of Lucia di Lammermoor. Flames trapped spectators inside, prompting the city to commission this replacement building almost immediately. Architect François Aune designed the new opera house, incorporating a grand staircase and a ceiling painted by Emmanuel Costa, and the structure opened to the public in eighteen eighty-five.
