The Palais de la Préfecture in Nice features a grand facade of warm, ochre-colored stone that anchors the end of the Cours Saleya. Originally built in the seventeenth century as the royal palace for the House of Savoy, it served as the residence for visiting kings when they traveled to this coastal territory. In eighteen ninety-six, Queen Victoria stayed here during her winter visit. She insisted on having her own private bathtub brought from England to ensure her comfort during her stay in the city.
