Palais communal de Nice

The Palais communal in Nice features a facade dominated by a heavy, rusticated stone base and a prominent clock tower that rises over the narrow streets of the old town. Built in the late nineteenth century to house the municipal government, it replaced the older town hall located near the cathedral. Architect Auguste Dieude-Degeorge designed the building to project administrative authority. During the construction, workers uncovered deep stone foundations and vaults belonging to the former convent of the Visitation of Sainte-Claire.
