Cimetière du Château

historic

The Cimetière du Château crowns the hill of the old fortress, marked by its sheer limestone walls and the dense clusters of white marble monuments visible from the coast below. This site replaced the original city cemetery in seventeen eighty-three, moving burials away from the crowded parish churches into the open air. Emilie Péan, the wife of a French minister, rests here beneath a haunting, life-sized bronze sculpture of herself, forever frozen in the act of mourning her own death beside an open grave.
